Stress is something that we all experience in one way or another- but everyone deals with stress differently.  Many people have stress in their lives with work, school, family, money, relationships, or for many other reasons.  It seems as though the stresses of Christmas and the holidays begin as soon as November starts.

Stress is a normal part of life and many things that we do, or events that happen around you put stress on your body.  Stress is experienced in your environment, your body and your thoughts.

Stress can cause symptoms including headaches, stomach upset, loss or gain in appetite, problems sleeping, anxiety, depression and elevated blood pressure.

According to a recent study, 75-90% of all doctor’s office visits are for stress-related ailments and complaints (http://www.webmd.com/balance/stress-management/effects-of-stress-on-your-body)

Stress is such as common feeling for most people, and many people turn to pharmaceutical drugs, alcohol and tobacco to try and relieve it.  Unfortunately, this only temporarily relieves the stress and tends to keep the body in a stressed state rather than getting to the root cause.

Here are some healthier suggestions for ways to relieve your stress, no matter what the cause:

  • Take a walk/run outside
  • Spend a few minutes focusing on your breath
  • Laugh
  • Give someone a hug/kiss
  • Call your best friend/someone in your family
  • Eat chocolate
  • Think about something you are grateful for
  • Smile
  • Listen to soothing music/nature sounds
  • Exercise
  • Have a good cry
  • Yoga
  • Think positive thoughts
  • Have a bubble bath
  • Focus on one task at a time
  • Spend time with people you love
