Acupuncture – What is it all about?
Acupuncture has been part of the healthcare system in China for at least 2500 years. It is based on the principle that there are patterns of energy flow (Qi) that run throughout the body and are essential for health. Each meridian is associated with a different organ system. It is the balance of the body’s organs that keeps the body in good health. If the energy flow is out of balance, sickness occurs.
Acupuncture involves the insertion of very thin, solid, metallic needles into the skin at specific points on the body. The needles are inserted to various depths along pathways in the body called “meridians” through which the qi vital energy runs. The needles can be manipulated manually or by electrical stimulation once inserted.
Acupuncture is used either on its own for the treatment of some conditions or in combination with other treatments. It can be used both for diagnosis as well as in treatment and pain relief.
